At Infinite Networks, we monitor the sync speeds across our G.fast customers to ensure that our services meet expectations. The following insights offer an overview of typical performance, including average speeds, suburb-specific trends, and the impact of cable drop length.

Please note that the statistics presented in this blog post reflects a subset of the Infinite Networks’ customer base within the broader Vision Network and does not represent all G.fast connections across Canberra.

Overall Average Sync Speeds

The average sync speeds across our G.fast network highlight the service’s capacity to meet demanding internet requirements:

  • Average Downstream Speed: 686 Mbps
  • Average Upstream Speed: 97 Mbps

These averages reflect the consistent high-speed performance that many customers experience, though individual speeds can vary based on several factors.

Sync Speeds between Suburbs

Average sync speeds differ between suburbs, influenced by factors such as infrastructure and proximity to network equipment.

Below are two examples illustrating this variation of average downstream and upstream speeds:

  • Weston:
    • Downstream Speed: 885 Mbps
    • Upstream Speed: 108 Mbps
  • Ainslie:
    • Downstream Speed: 555 Mbps
    • Upstream Speed: 85 Mbps

Top 5 Suburbs for Average Downstream Speeds

The following suburbs are leading the way with the fastest average downstream sync speeds in our G.fast network:

  1. Kingston: 1168 Mbps
  2. Canberra City: 1168 Mbps
  3. Dickson: 1148 Mbps
  4. Campbell: 1085 Mbps
  5. Giralang: 1043 Mbps

These high speeds indicate the quality of infrastructure and optimal conditions in these areas.

The Role of Cable Drop Length in Sync Speeds

The distance between the node and the customer’s premises—known as the cable drop length—can significantly influence sync speeds. Here’s how it plays out across different scenarios:

  • Shortest Drop Length:
    • Length: 12 metres
    • Downstream Speed: 1168 Mbps
    • Upstream Speed: 115 Mbps
  • Longest Drop Length:
    • Length: 327 metres
    • Downstream Speed: 167 Mbps
    • Upstream Speed: 32 Mbps

Despite the longer cable drop, some customers still achieve solid speeds. One connection with a 325-metre drop managed:

  • Downstream Speed: 575 Mbps
  • Upstream Speed: 86 Mbps

This indicates that while shorter drop lengths typically result in higher sync speeds, the G.fast service can still deliver strong performance over longer distances. However, we suspect that the initial drop length may have been measured prior to installation, with a shorter path ultimately provisioned.

Predicted speeds based on drop length based on averages

The above predictive speeds chart provides a perspective of how sync speed is expected to degrade over varying drop lengths using our customer sync statistics. As distance increases, the signal gradually weakens, causing a consistent decline in sync speeds. This trend aligns with the typical behavior of technologies like G.fast, VDSL2, and other broadband services, where signal attenuation over longer copper or fiber lines results in reduced throughput.

The polynomial regression model used to predict these speeds offers an approximation of how performance could behave across unmeasured distances. At shorter lengths, speeds remain high and stable, reflecting optimal signal integrity. However, beyond a certain threshold, the curve steepens, signaling more noticeable degradation. This drop-off highlights the challenge of maintaining high speeds over longer drop lengths, where factors such as cable quality, noise interference, and environmental conditions can further impact performance.

In Summary

Our G.fast network delivers reliable, high-speed internet across a variety of suburbs, with average speeds meeting or exceeding expectations. While infrastructure quality and cable drop lengths influence sync speeds, customers across all areas can expect fast, dependable connections much faster than nbn fibre to the node alternatives.
